    Küçüklüğümden beri haritalara ilgi duymuşumdur. Onlar bana kitaplar ve fotoğraflarla birlikte gidemeyeceğim, göremeyeceğim yerlere düşsel yolculuklar yapma olanağı sağlamıştır. Ayrıca yeryüzüne farklı ölçeklerde bakabilme heyecanını yaşatmıştır. Uçak yolculuklarında pencere kenarında oturmak, aşağıdaki yeryüzü biçimlerini haritadakilerle karşılaştırmak, bir kenti, kasabayı, gölü, akarsuyu yukarıdan tanımak en hoşlandığım uğraşlardandır. Buna bir bakıma dünyaya büyük bir ölçekle bakmak da diyebiliriz. Bu sanıldığı kadar kolay değildir, çünkü yeryüzünün engebeleri ve bakış açısı biçimlerin haritadakilerden farklı görünmesine yol açar. İşte bu nedenle, Üstün Aydıngöz' ün Uzaydan Türkiye adlı kitabını gördüğümde bir hazine bulmuş gibi sevinmiş, satın almış, masamda haritalar, elimde büyüteç bir solukta okumuştum.
    Herhangi bir yeri veya olguyu incelerken kullandığımız ölçek önemlidir. Örneğin termodinamik çözümlemede moleküler (mikroskopik) veya gözle görülebilir büyüklükte (makroskopik) ölçeklerden söz edilebilir. Bazan bu ölçeklerden birinin bazan diğerinin kullanımı çözümlemede kolaylık sağlar. Hiç kuşku yok ki her iki ölçekle bakabilmek anlayışımızı zenginleştirir. Toplumsal ve bilimsel incelemeler de böyledir. Ölçek değiştirmek, başka bir deyişle olayın bütününü görebilmek veya bir ayrıntıya odaklanmak aynı oranda önem taşır.
    İnsan ömrü ortalama yetmiş yıldır. Yaşamımız zaman ölçeği olarak alınırsa, insanlığın genel gelişiminin algılanması zordur. Ölçek büyütülürse gelişimin yönü çok açık bir biçimde görülür. İleriyi görebilmek, insanlar ve özellikle yönetici konumunda olanlar için istenen bir özelliktir. İleriyi görebilmek zamanın akışına bir bakıma daha büyük bir ölçekte bakmak demektir, başka bir deyişle geçmişi de görebilmek demektir.
    Günümüz teknolojisi yer ve zamana çok daha küçük ölçeklerde bakabilmemizi sağlıyor. Elektron mikroskoplar, hızlı çalışan fotoğraf makineleri, lazer anemometreleri ve benzer ölçüm cihazları bu kapsamda sayılabilir. Öte yandan giderek gelişen bilişim teknolojileri de mikro ölçekli bilgiyi makro ölçekte değerlendirmeyi olanaklı kılıyor. Böylece insan bir ölçekten diğerine kolaylıkla geçebiliyor.
    Edebiyat ve sanat bir bakıma insanların yer ve zamana göre değişmeyen özelliklerini, yer ve zamana göre değişen biçimlerde yansıtır. Bunlardan biri de sevgidir. Sevgiye doğa ve insanlık ölçeğinde bakamayan bir bireyin, kişisel ölçekte bakabilmesi olanaklı mıdır acaba ?

    Since my childhood I was very much interested in maps. Together with books and photographs they enabled me to make imaginary journeys to places which I hand no chance to go. Maps also give me the excitement of looking at the world from different scales. Sitting at windowside in airplanes, comparing what I see from above with those on the map, identifying a city, a village, a lake or a river is one of the things that I like very much. In a way, this is looking at the world on a larger scale. This is not as easy as it sounds, because the ground elevation and the direction of observation cause the forms to appear different from the maps. It is for this reason that I was fascinated when I saw the book, 'Turkey from Space' by Üstün Aydıngöz, immediately bought it and read it with maps on my desk and a magnifier in my hand.
    The scale that we use when examining a physical place or a phenomena is very important. In thermodynamic analysis for example, a molecular (microscopic) or visible (macroscopic) scales may be chosen. The use of one of these scales or the other may be advantageous in different cases. It is doubtless that being able to use both scales or approaches will enrich our understanding. Social and scientific examinations may be considered in a similar manner. Changing the scale, in other words seeing the problem as a whole or focusing at a detail are equally important.
    An average human life is seventy years. If we take our lives as the time scale, it may be very hard to understand the general progress of humanity. If the scale is magnified, the direction of progress is clearly seen. To have foresight is a valuable characteristic that is sought in people, especially in those who step forward to lead us. To see the future is to be able to look at the flow of time at a larger scale in a way, having a good perspective of the past as well.
    Modern technology enables us to look at place and time at very small scales. Electron microscopes, high speed cameras, laser anemometers and other measuring devices may be counted in this respect. On the other hand switly progressing information technologies allow us to process data acquired at microscopic scale for use at a macroscopic scale. Therefore one is able to transfer easily from one scale to the other.
    Literature and arts portray the traits of human beings which are independent of time and place in forms which change with time and place. One of these traits is love. Is it possible for a human being to be able to understand love at a personal scale, if he or she cannot look at it at the scale of nature and humanity ?
