Hamza Salih Erden is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computational Science and Engineering at the Informatics Institute of Istanbul Technical University (ITU), where he leads the Thermal Systems in Cloud Infrastructure research group. His research focuses on the modeling, optimization and experimental evaluation of thermal and energy systems, with data centers as the primary application area: cooling infrastructure and airflow management, thermal energy storage and heat recovery, demand-side management and grid integration. His recent work extends to building energy systems, including performance testing of heat pumps.
He received his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from ITU (2007) and his M.Sc. (2009) and Ph.D. (2013) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University, where he worked on data center thermal modeling within the SU–IBM data center research program. Since 2024, he has been a visiting researcher in Germany, working on data center energy systems and heat pump testing. He is a member of ASHRAE, ASME and IEEE and a recipient of the 2015 ASHRAE Willis H. Carrier Award.
