Thermal Systems in Cloud Infrastructure

Informatics Institute at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) expanded its curriculum by introducing a new track “Thermal Systems in Cloud Infrastructure” in the Applied Informatics Department as part of the Information and Communications Engineering Graduate Program. Other tracks in the graduate program are “Data Processing”, “Communications and Network” and “Bioinformatics”.

The department is offering courses on thermal and energy efficiency challenges in the cloud infrastructure at various levels, from chip to cooling tower. Mechanical Engineering (ME) background is an advantage but not required as the “Thermal Systems Engineering” course is intended to get the non-ME students up to speed. One of the required courses of the track is “Data Center Infrastructure and Energy Efficiency”, which briefly introduces servers, storage and networking equipment that are housed in data centers, but the focus of the course will be primarily on the energy efficiency of the power and cooling infrastructure that supports the IT equipment. The other required course of the track “Cooling and Air Conditioning in Data Centers” focuses both on the fundamentals and applications of the thermal management applications for data centers and cooling infrastructure. “Multi-scale Thermal Modeling of Data Centers” is an advanced course in the program introducing modeling applications for heat and fluid flow in electronics and data centers at various scales. Please feel free to contact me regarding the track and courses.
