1Graduate Requirements of the University and the Department
Carefully read the information on the ITU Graduate School website and the department's graduate requirements, and make sure that the graduate programs of the ITU Computer Engineering Department are suitable for you.
2Research Areas
Since MSc and PhD studies mean specializing in a particular field, you need to work on a subject related to the area of expertise of the advisor who will guide you.
My research areas
- Quality-aware modeling of object-oriented software
- Measuring, evaluating and improving the design quality of software
- Detecting design flaws in software
Required background
- Object-oriented programming, design patterns
- Machine learning
- Statistics, data analysis
The first item is covered in undergraduate education. Courses on the other topics should be taken during graduate studies.
Publications
- Publications produced in the theses completed under my supervision
Research group

3Thesis Work
The thesis should address a current problem selected from the main research areas listed in item 2 above. To determine a good thesis topic, it is necessary to follow the related publications and identify the problems currently being studied.
Keep in mind that a scientific contribution and novelty are expected in MSc and (especially) PhD theses, and work accordingly.
4Applying for Supervision
Before applying to me for supervision, please complete the following steps:
- Examine previous theses and publications.
- Determine a current research topic.
- Prepare a short report (in English) covering the work (publications) on the topic you have chosen.
- What are the current problems in this area, and what solutions have been proposed?
- Are there problems worth working on? What approaches could be proposed as solutions?
5Recommended Courses
I recommend that students who will work under my supervision choose their courses, within the framework of the regulations, from the following:
- Software Design Quality
- Machine Learning
- Recommendation Systems in Software Engineering
- Discrete Mathematics
- Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes
- Statistics and Estimation in Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence
- Graph Theory and Algorithms
- Model Checking for Software Systems
- Deep Learning
- Data Mining
- Pattern Recognition
6Following the Literature
Following the publications related to your research topic is very important, both before starting and during your thesis work.
The ITU Library has electronic subscriptions to most of the publications required for our work. They can be accessed (only from the ITU campus) via the following link: library.itu.edu.tr
7Group Work and Meetings
Meetings are held with groups of students and faculty members working on similar topics to share knowledge and discuss ideas. In these meetings, students in the literature review phase give presentations on the papers they have read, and students in the thesis phase report on the progress of their theses.
Meeting days and times are set at the beginning of the semester according to the schedules of the faculty members and students. Regular attendance at these meetings is mandatory.
8Preparing Publications
According to the department's graduate requirements, publishing in international conferences and journals during or after the thesis work is mandatory. To achieve this, your thesis topic must be current and your work must include a scientific contribution.
ITU provides financial support to its students who attend scientific events abroad.
