Course Description:

Weekly lectures and extended experimental projects designed to demonstrate experimental and analytical methods as applied to complex mechanical systems. Topics will include system dynamics and controls, heat transfer and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, and machine dynamics systems. Emphasis on hands-on laboratory experience, report writing, oral presentations, teamwork and the design of experiments.

Objectives:

1.      To provide students with theory and hands-on laboratory experience

2.      To teach students to design and analyze experiments for engineering systems

3.      To provide students with practical illustration of concepts taught in the core classes.

4.      To teach students how to plan and execute an experimental investigation and compare with analytical results.

5.      To teach students to present results in the form of technical reports.

6.      To teach students how to present results in a poster format and give oral presentation.

7.   To teach students to work in teams.

Outcomes:

1.      Investigate how to compare the mathematical model of a system with its experimental performance.

2.      Create a proposal for an experimental system.

3.      Design and execute experiments.

4.      To be able to write technical report to present the results and conclusions of an experimental project in a legible, informative written format.

5.      Present a proposal for a project

6.   Present the results of a project in results a poster format and give oral presentation.
