         Abstract: In this study, the treatability of opium alkaloids processing industry wastewaters with high soluble COD fractions, were investigated to meet the discharge standards for receiving water bodies. In addition to that, a series of applicable treatment alternatives were developed for this industry which morphine -being a strategic product- is extracted from opium. At the first stage of the study, the characteristic of the wastewater was determined and evaluated statistically. Following that, the raw wastewater was fed to a lab-scale anaerobic upflow sludge blanket reactor (UASBR), and subsequently, the effluent of this process was supplied to an aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for removal of remaining substrate. The kinetic parameters characterizing the biological processes, both in anaerobic and subsequent aerobic reactors, were also determined. The results from these biological treatability studies pointed to the necessity for further treatment. It is now clear from the results of some previous studies that COD removal efficiencies of physico-chemical and chemical oxidation processes are not satisfactory for the wastewater of this industry. Taking into account the above considerations, the final stage of the study was carried out via choosing Fenton's oxidation as the advanced chemical treatment alternative to be applied to the biological treatment effluents. For this purpose, dosages as low as 600 mg/l FeSO4 and 200 mg/l H2O2 were applied for Fenton's oxidation studies and 87% of the residual COD, which consisted inert COD equal to 2% of the total influent COD was eliminated, was eliminated. 95% color removal was also maintained. As a summary, a new and sustainable advanced treatment alternative was developed and proved to be valuable for opium alkaloids processing industry, which experiences serious problems in meeting receiving body discharge limits.
