Abstract – Lightweight dielectric materials, such as polymers and composites, are increasingly used in the automotive and aerospace industries. Recently, there has been an increase in the use of these dielectric materials, especially in electric vehicles. However, these materials cannot shield sensitive electronics from electromagnetic interference (EMI).

The current work investigates the EMI performance of these lightweight dielectric materials using an experimental setup based on the ASTM D4935-99 standard and EMI simulation using the ANSYS HFSS. This work studies how metal coating from zinc and aluminum bronze can improve the shielding performance of polymer-based dielectrics, such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polyphthalamide (PPA).

Based on the findings of this study, a thin coating (50 μm) of Zn on the surface of PPS and a thin coating of 5 μm and 10 μm of Al-Bronze, respectively, on the surface of PEEK and PPA have indicated an increase in the shielding effectiveness (SE) when subjected to EMI.

The shielding effectiveness significantly increased from 7 dB for the uncoated polymer to approximately 40 dB at low frequencies and up to approximately 60 dB at high frequencies for coated polymers. Finally, various approaches are recommended for improving the SE of polymeric materials under the influence of EMI.

Professor Huseyin R. HIZIROGLU

Biography - Dr. Huseyin R. Hiziroglu is a Life Senior Member of IEEE and Professor of Electrical Engineering at Kettering University. He joined the former General Motors Institute as an Assistant Professor in 1982 and was promoted to Professor in 1991. His expertise includes dielectric materials, electromagnetic fields, high-voltage systems, electric machines, and energy systems.

Over more than four decades at Kettering University, Dr. Hiziroglu has taught a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including electromagnetic field theory, power systems, electric machines, power electronics, high-voltage generation and measurement techniques, circuit theory, and microelectronics. His dedication to teaching has prepared generations of engineers for careers in industry and research.

His research combines experimental and theoretical investigations of dielectric materials and high-voltage insulation systems. Current research focuses on the electrical and thermal aging of polymeric dielectrics to predict their lifespan for energy systems and electric transportation applications, as well as the breakdown characteristics of environmentally friendly gaseous dielectrics for high-voltage power systems.

Dr. Hiziroglu has received research support from industry, including General Motors and 100K Ideas, and from government agencies such as the National Science Foundation. He established Kettering University's High-Voltage Laboratory, a unique instructional and research facility in southern Michigan that also serves students and faculty from neighboring universities through lectures and laboratory demonstrations.

He has authored or co-authored more than 80 publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, including IEEE Transactions, Journal of Electrostatics, Physics of Plasmas, and Polymers, as well as numerous papers in international IEEE conference proceedings.

Dr. Hiziroglu co-authored Electric Machinery and Transformers (3rd edition, Oxford University Press, 2001) and Electromagnetic Field Theory Fundamentals (2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, 2004). These textbooks have been translated into Spanish, Korean, and Chinese and are widely used by engineering students around the world

.

An internationally recognized scholar, Dr. Hiziroglu has delivered invited lectures at universities, research institutions, and professional conferences worldwide. He has served as a consultant to the United Nations and as a visiting professor at universities in Türkiye and China. He also served as Co-Editor of IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (Part A: Dielectric Fundamentals) and, since 2020, has served as Guest Editor for four special issues on "Electrical Machines and Transformers" in the MDPI journal Energies.
