At those years, undergraduate education
in İstanbul Technical University (İTU) was a five year
integrated program including studies both for B.S. and
M.S. Degrees, and graduates were owning "High Engineer"
degree which was officially recognized as M.S. Degree
of today. On the other hand, dissertation of Metin
Demiralp was in fact related to Theoretical Chemistry
which was not counted as a PhD field by the
Interuniversity Board of Turkey at those days and hence
the nearest field, Nuclear Chemistry, was entered as
the field of the dissertation in his Ph. D. Certification
Document (diploma). In reality, the field of Metin
Demiralp's studies gives very small intersection with
Nuclear Chemistry. His current actual research fields,
that is, the fields where he makes publications are in
Computational Science and Engineering which
requires a powerful, not purely but mostly, applied
mathematical background together with the basic concepts
of physics, chemistry, and computer sciences. This field
is under the roof of the Computational Science and
Engineering Department of Informatics Institute, in
İstanbul Technical University. A group is formed from
the Ph.D. and M.S. students studying on the topics in
these fields and from the visiting scientists. The name
of the group is "Group for Science and Methods of
Computing" and producing original ideas and making
publications in prestigious scientific journals and
giving talks in prestigious scientific meetings.
Metin Demiralp and his group
had a strong collaboration with Professor Herschel
Rabitz and his group in Princeton University (USA).
This collaboration has its roots in 1980. His group has
effective interactions with some other groups also,
inside and outside Türkiye.

Professor Metin Demiralp had retired on
4 May 2015 because of age limitation. He has continued
to hold a post-retirement (somehow equivalent to the
emeritus) position until his supervision of MS and PhD
Theses of relevant students ends. However, the relevant
institute directorate demanded the evacuation of his
office despite his last PhD student needed a few more
weeks to complete and then defend her thesis. Office
evacuation has been realised in mid June of 2021. Now,
he does not currently have an official relation to any
academic establishment under his own preference.
|
Professor Metin Demiralp has never had a
position of Assistant or Associate Professor in any
university. Instead, since his graduation from İstanbul
Technical University in 1971 until June of 1988, he had
several positions for research scientists studying in
Applied Mathematics, in Research Institutes of Scientific
and Technical Council of Türkiye, located at Gebze, and
he was promoted up to and including the highest level
position, position for Senior Research Scientist.

Business Life and Experience and also
Collaborations
|
|
TÜBİTAK (Full time): Business life of
Professor Metin Demiralp started at 1 October 1971 in
Applied Mathematics Division of Marmara Scientific and
Industrial Institute (an institute of Scientific and
Technical Council of Türkiye) located at Gebze. It is
an important fact that the business environment which
was totally directed to scientific research had
positively contributed to the rapid formation of his
scientific personality and the rapid development of his
scientific creativity to produce original ideas. This
business environment has been continued to exist until
his transfer to a Professor position in İstanbul
Technical University at June 1988. In this period of
time, roughly for 17 years, he took various
responsibilities under the titles, respectively "Junior
Research Scientist", "Research Scientist", and finally
"Senior Research Scientist" after his starting title
"Research Assistant" and had a productive scientific
life.
İTU (Science and Letters Faculty):
Professor Dr. Metin Demiralp was assigned to a
position of professor for "Applied Mechanics" in
Engineering Sciences Department of Science and Letters
Faculty in İstanbul Technical University at 21 June 1988.
In this department, he took responsibilites for research,
teaching and academic administration, and, this continued
until September 2002.
TÜBİTAK (Part Time): Metin Demiralp
governed projects and conducted scientific research as
being a part time research scientist in Institute for
Sciences at Marmara Research Center of Scientific and
Technical Council of Türkiye, located in Gebze. This
activities were realized in the three year period
between 1990 and 1993.
İTU (Informatic Institute): Metin
Demiralp transferred to Informatics Institute of İstanbul
Technical University in September 2002 after his three
years as the founder director of that institution. He was
a professor in the Computational Science and Engineering
Department of the same institute and conducting his
research and education activities especially in
Computational Science and Engineering until his
retirement on 4 May 2015 because of age limitation.
Princeton University (USA):
Professor Metin Demiralp worked as a post-doctoral
researcher in Princeton University (New Jersey, USA)
for a 13 month period of time between 1979-1980.
Position was in the group of Professor Herschel Rabitz
who is a very good and well-known scientist in Applied
Mathematics and Chemistry all over the world. Metin
Demiralp, after a roughly 5 year break, starting from
1985, rejoined with this group in semester breaks of
every year (winters and summers) for scientific research
collaboration. This, roughly 3 months per year,
collaboration continued until the fall of 2003 and
although it is physically ceased in the following years
the collaboration through Internet was still continuing
for a while and the produced findings were being
published in prestigious international scientific
journals. In the framework of this collaboration, very
important findings have been obtained and published
especially about the "Optimal Control of Molecular
Systems" and "High Dimensional Model Representation
(Approximation of Multivariate Functions)". These
findings and experiences have also been used in the
formation of a scientific research group and therefore
contributed very much to the scientific environment of
Türkiye.
Işık University (Support for Education and
Constructioning): Professor Metin Demiralp
gave supports at various levels to Işık University within
the permission of İstanbul Technical University. In this
framework, he contributed to the Computer Science and
Engineering Department in Engineering Faculty of the
university, by lecturing for various important topics,
by supervising senior theses, and by conducting various
administrative constructional projects. He was taken
the responsibility of administrating the department as
being vice chairman for an 18 month period of time. After
these actions, at 2004, there has been no relation to
this institution since both sides of the collaboration
stopped the alliance because of various reasons.
Neuroscience Group in Psychology Department,
University of Michigan at Ann Arbour (inofficial
collaboration for mathematics in neuro- science):
Metin Demiralp had been in collaborations
with some members of this department to reveal various
mathematical aspects of the neuroscience. These efforts
led to the establishment of a theory later called
"Probabilistic Evolution Theory" to solve ordinary
differential equations under initial conditions in an
infinite linear and homogeneous vector differential
equation accompanied by a given initial vector value.
This happened at the end of first decade in 2000s.
İTU (Informatic Institute, Post-retirement
collaboration: Metin Demiralp volunteerly
continued to supervise his MS. and PhD. students in their
thesis studies under the permission of the board of the
institute. His group (Group for Science and Methods
of Computing <G4SMC>) also survived until nowadays
under his leadership. These are all realized upon the
approval of the authoritative organs in Informatics
Institute on this focus.
Middle East Technical University, Mathematics
Department, Collaboration for Two PhD Studies with Prof.
Dr. Okay ÇELEBİ: The first official PhD
supervising collaboration of Prof. Dr. Metin Demiralp has
been realized with Prof. Dr. Okay ÇELEBİ in Middle East
Technical University Mathematics Department for two Phd
studies where M. Demiralp has been co-supervisor for
theses. More information are presented in coming sections.
Marmara University Mathematics Department,
Unofficial Collaboration with Professor N. Abdülbaki
Baykara and therefore his students supervised by him
for MS and Ph. Degrees: One of the
most important part of Metin Demiralp's group (Group
for Science and Methods of Computing) has been composed
by Prof. Dr. N. Abdülbaki Baykara and his students from
Mathematics Department in the Science and Letters Faculty
of Marmara University. They were in the Ms. Degree and
Ph. Degree Programs of that department. Their names
and publications are somehow appropriately mentioned in
the coming parts of this site.
