Title of Ph.D. dissertation: “Numerical simulation of aircraft icing with an adaptive thermodynamic model considering ice accretion”

Concept: The main idea is to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for writing a modular computer program via FORTRAN to simulate the icing phenomenon in aircraft and predict the final shape of ice on the wings. First, the grid is generated around an airfoil. Then, the airflow is determined and the convective heat transfer coefficient is calculated. Next, the distribution of water droplets under the influence of airflow is specified by using the Eulerian method to obtain the collection efficiency of water droplets on the body. Eventually, by applying thermodynamic calculations, the ice accretion on the surface is found. Finally, the entire icing simulation is repeated up to the determined exposure time to predict the final shape of ice on the surface.
