ITU/EED-EBRC

Istanbul Technical University-Faculty of Civil Engineering

Profile

Environmental Biotechnology Research Center (EBRC) was founded as one out of the 10 national interdisciplinary centers of excellence established jointly by The Scientific and Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), to manage existing R&D potential, to keep up with the emerging scientific and technological developments, to generate cooperative contribution to the international science base and to train new researchers.

:: Foundation and Organization

The Environmental Biotechnology Research Center was founded in 1997, based on the consensus between TUBITAK and the Environmental Engineering Department (EED) at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), as a research center located at the main campus of ITU. After the closure of the consent in 2002, EBRC has continued its activities embodied exclusively in ITU-EED, which has been housing the Center since its foundation, and has significant contribution via satisfying the physical needs of the EBRC, as well as providing top-quality researcher profile. To ensure the long-term objective of creating new momentum in the field of environmental biotechnology, the EBRC continues to carry out fundamental, strategic and applied research activities since May 2004 at its new location; Dr. Sedat Üründül Environmental Sciences Laboratory, at ITU-EED, to nurture the knowledge infrastructure and to extend knowledge-application interface.

:: Objectives

The EBRC, combining the principles of basic sciences with engineering methodologies within the context of understanding, manipulation and utilization of the potential of the microbial world for the improvement of environmental quality, occupies a central and leading role in Turkey in the field of environmental biotechnology. The prime concerns of the EBRC are to lead the way in determining local and international research priorities in environmental biotechnology and to develop a knowledge-application interface where the gap still exists in translating research outcomes into practical realities. The individual and collective strengths, research, and expertise generating from EBRC are strongly believed to serve for the realization of the long-term commitment of the EBRC to create and implement innovative, appropriate, feasible, and sustainable solutions for the elucidation of real-world problems, addressing the needs of the national and international communities, in the field of environmental biotechnology.
