Improved engine efficiency - impact of deposits on HCCI combustion

Project aims: A theoretical and experimental study in Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines to  model the impact of deposits on thermal environment and auto-ignition.  Models that are developed are validated through engine experiments.

Context:  HCCI engines offer the potential for high efficiency power generation with low emissions through the auto-ignition of premixed fuel and air charges.  High compression ratios relative to SI engines offer improved fuel consumption and the homogeneous charge and low temperatures at lean conditions offer better smoke and NOx emissions than conventional diesel engines.  However the control of fuel-air auto-ignition will be compromised by combustion chamber deposits, the formation of which are favoured under such engine conditions.  Modelling how deposits increase mixture temperature and release pro-knock species to promote auto-ignition enables the development of understanding necessary for this new engine technology to reach market application.
